Maria Del Carmen Alcazar Mauro "Carmen"

Our beautiful mother, Maria Del Carmen Alcazar Mauro (Carmen), of Gainesville, passed away peacefully at home on January 9th, 2023 at the age of 67 after a year-long battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Carmen was born in Veracruz, Mexico on February 7th, 1955 to Luis Alcazar Gamboa and Santos Mauro Amador. Carmen worked as an accountant in her native country until she met her husband, Ruvisel Cruz Vasquez, and moved to Minnesota in 1991 where she saw snow for the first time. Carmen was brave in the face of the many challenges she encountered in a foreign country, such as not knowing the language and not knowing anyone other than her husband. Despite the hurdles she had to overcome, Carmen created a beautiful life for herself and did everything possible to provide for her daughters, Becky and Betsy, whom she considered her biggest treasures. After moving to Gainesville in 2003, Carmen spent almost 20 years cleaning houses for local families. This was more than just a job for her as she loved these families so much and prided herself on doing the best job possible for them. She watched their children grow up and became an integral part of their lives.

It was easy to love Carmen just by simply seeing her smile. Her smile could warm anyone’s heart and it was not uncommon for strangers to compliment her on her sweet smile. Carmen radiated love and kindness everywhere she went. Hearing the news of her cancer diagnosis was devastating, but in true Carmen fashion, she remained positive and never complained about her situation. This is what allowed her to fight as hard as she did. Even on her lowest days, she kept her head high and never stopped smiling or making people laugh. Anyone else would have been broken, but she remained strong. She has always been a brave woman, and her bravery and resilience showed more than ever during this last year of her life. Just because she is no longer here, doesn’t mean she lost her fight. She will be missed, but her smile will live forever in our memories and her gentle nature will live in our heart.

Carmen is survived by her husband, daughters, her brother, Luis Armando Alcazar Mauro, her sister, Cleotilde Alcazar Mauro, and four nephews.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 21st at 5 PM at Memorial Park, Riverside Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Good News Clinics in her memory as she greatly benefitted from their services and was grateful for their attentive care.
