Dr. Sylvester Singleton was born on February 8, 1943 to the late Cicero Paul, Sr. and Dora M. Singleton in Cleveland, GA. He was the fourth of eleven children. He departed this life early on Tuesday morning at Piedmont Eastside Hospital in Snellville, GA. Syl (Sylvester), as he was called by family, attended Fair Street School where he played football. After graduating from high school in 1962, he attended Savannah State College; however, putting his education on hold for a time and enlisted in United States Army. He served two tours of duty in Viet-Nam to prevent his younger brother from serving in Viet-Nam. It was in his second tour of duty where he was severely wounded which affected him until his death. After returning home from the military, he worked as a Campus Police Officer and continued his studies at Savannah State College, earning his Master in Physical Education. While there, he pledged the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. After graduating from college, he worked as a Georgia State Trooper for several years, he also taught at East Hall High School in Gainesville, GA. Sylvester joined Antioch Baptist Church as an adult and taught Sunday School and Bible Study. He made numerous trips to Africa sharing the Word of God. He loved fine cars, the game of football, golf, and teaching. Sylvester was a kind and compassionate soul. He did not drink, he did not use profane language, he did not raise his voice; he was an educated & peaceable man. Although he tried to live his best life, he eventually found himself in a federal prison for a number of years, earning his Ph.D. in Theology while there, leading many souls to Christ. I am sure he would agree with the Apostle Paul when he penned Philippians 3:7 – 11: 7 I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ 9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ [a] For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith. 10 I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, 11 so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead! Syl was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter: Sylvia M. Singleton-Oparinde (Ginger); three brothers: John H. Moore, Joe L. Moore, Cicero Paul Singleton, Jr.; and one sister: Ellen V. Singleton. He leaves to cherish his memories sons: Anson Singleton of Bluffton, SC and Khalid Robinson of Los Angeles, CA; one brother: Albert P. Singleton of Gainesville, GA; four sisters: Ollie J.
