Nancy Martin Brewer

Obituary Date: Thursday, January 5, 2023

One of the most courageous and resilient women left her earthly home following an extended period of declining health.

Nancy Martin Brewer of Gainesville died Thursday, January 5, 2023, just 6 short years, to the date, of losing her loving husband, James C. (Bimbo) Brewer of 58 years.  Nancy was born February 3, 1944, to Perry Britton and Ailene Rollins Martin. She was a graduate of both Gainesville High School and The University of Georgia.  After graduation she was an elementary school teacher in Gainesville.

In 1964, Nancy and Bimbo married after dating since the 2nd grade. After the fire destroyed the downtown church, Nancy and Bimbo were the first to be married in the existing First Baptist Church, where she remained a lifelong member. Shortly after they married, tragedy struck when Nancy lost her sight due to a rare blood disorder. After teaching and being a new bride for such a short amount of time, when tragedy struck, Nancy did not see blindness as the end of her life. With sheer determination she pushed forward with the help of her wonderful parents, amazingly supportive sister, Harriett Martin Hulsey and other friends and family.

Ten years after learning how to survive with no sight, Nancy and Bimbo decided they wanted to have a child. On June 21, 1974, Nancy Erin Brewer was born, and she gave new meaning to Nancy's life. With the help of wonderful friends, Nancy learned to care for her infant child.

Throughout the years, Nancy learned to do as much, if not more, than she did prior to losing her sight. Nancy was a member of Junior League of Gainesville-Hall County where she used her teaching talents in her placement at The Gainesville Speech Center. She had a profound talent for working with children. She was also a member of the Creative Arts Study Club, worked as a volunteer for the Hall County Library System and was a board member for the American Red Cross.

Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, sister, and her husband, Bimbo.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Erin and Blue Still, two grandsons, Benjamin and Jackson Still, brother-in-law, Julius M. Hulsey, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Fred and Kay Brewer. Nieces, Havilyn Hulsey Towns (Craig), Hadley Hulsey Duncan, Josie Brewer Rock (Marcus). Nephews, Britt S. Hulsey (Leah) and Joshua C. Brewer. She is also survived by her great nieces and great nephews, caregiver, friend and "Godsend to the family" Marge Alexander.

The family wishes to thank all of the Doctors, nurses and Hospice staff at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center in memory of Nancy.

Funeral services will be held Sunday January 8, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of First Baptist Church on Green Street. Dr. Thomas Smiley and Dr. Tyler Smiley will officiate.  There will be a private family interment at the Alta Vista Cemetery with Dr. Bill Coates officiating.  The family will receive friends in the parlor of First Baptist Church Sunday, January 8 from 2:00 p.m. until the funeral hour.
