James Daniel “Dan” Stowe

Obituary Date: Tuesday, December 20, 2022

Mr. James Daniel “Dan” Stowe, age 97 of Toccoa passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at the Stephens County Hospital.

A son of the late Jeff and Maggie Camp Stowe, he was born October 23, 1925 in Stephens County, Georgia where he lived a greater part of his life.  His family, the Stowe’s and Camp’s have resided in this area pre-Civil War and have produced strong dedicated Christians and red-blooded Americans.  He was a member of Toccoa Presbyterian Church.  He was baptized late in life by his Pastor in a creek in this area at his insistence.

He was a proud World War II Veteran, serving in the Army as a drill sergeant.  Until his last breath, he was a true patriot wearing his toboggan with the American Flag on his head.  Dan was recently honored by the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Georgia for having completed 75 years of membership of the Toccoa Lodge #309.

He was employed with Phillips 66 for many years but retired from Duke Energy as a Material Manager.  His jobs had taken him to Huntsville, Alabama and Charlotte, North Carolina but at heart, he was always a Georgia boy and when his parents needed him, he returned to Toccoa and built his home on family land on Rock Creek Road where he and his wife Thelma Webster Stowe lived and enjoyed mother nature in their backyard, especially growing his garden, feeding the squirrels and especially the birds.

His heart’s desire was to stay in his home until he died and this was made possible by a team of wonderful and dedicated caregivers, Dale Austin, Madelaine Austin, Alexis Castenada, Tammy Brown, Jerri Ryan, Kaylen Escalante, James Baldwin and especially Wonder Dog, Georgia. Additional thanks are extended to Jo Ann Bruner and Bill and Mary Bunch for their kindness and care since the passing of his wife, Thelma.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Webster Stowe in 2005, by a daughter Amy Jean Hanson in 2020 and by other close family members.

He is survived by a son, John David Stowe and his wife Judy of Hartwell, Georgia and their children Timothy, Matthew, Leonna, Tammy, David and Chris Martin and Christina and husband, Kenneth Cash; granddaughter, Jenny Schrader (William, USMC Ret) and their children, Liam, Angela, Trevor and Sarah; son-in-law, Bob Hansen of Virginia and his children, Sharyn Orlando, Shannon Dingus and Jessica Hansen.

Dan referred to his wife’s family as “Thelma’s People from Tennessee”.   They have always loved and been his family too, enjoying family reunions and visits with Uncle Dan.  He will be missed by the remaining 20+ nieces and nephews and one sister-in-law, Jean.

His family from Tennessee would like to thank the Community of Toccoa, Dr. Harry McDonald, Ann Pickett, Judge Glenda Ernest and many others who have made Dan’s journey from birth to death so meaningful and complete.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 3, 2023, 2 o’clock p.m. in the Hillcrest Chapel of the Acree-Davis Funeral Home with The Reverend Gary Pierstorff officiating.  Masons and other family member and friends will serve as pallbearers.
