Rachel Carolyn McConnell Whitworth

Mrs. Rachel Carolyn McConnell Whitworth, age 87, of Whitworth Road in Lavonia, Georgia passed away Monday, December 12, 2022, at the residence.

A daughter of the late William "Elmer" and Sarah Loftis McConnell, she was born October 10, 1935, in Athens, Georgia. She moved to Lavonia, Georgia after marriage in 1956, where she lived until her passing. She was a graduate of Comer High School, where she was an outstanding basketball player. She then went on to attend West Georgia College and then transferred to the University of Georgia where she graduated. She was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

She loved to play bridge and spend time in the garden looking after her roses for many years. She was also an avid Georgia Bulldogs football fan attending as many games as she could for over 60 years.  She was a member of the Lavonia First Baptist Church for the past 66 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Shuratt Whitworth, her sister-in-law Patsy Whitworth Gilbert and her parents.

She is survived by two daughters and son in-law, Wendy C. Whitworth of Lilburn, Georgia and Leigh and Tom Kelly of Monroe, Georgia; two sons and daughter-in-law, Barry and Laura Whitworth of Toccoa and Randy S. Whitworth of Lavonia; grandchildren, Franklin and Elizabeth Whitworth, Christopher and Jamie Whitworth, Wesley Kelly, Matthew Kelly, Caroline Kelly, Steven Whitworth and Sarah Whitworth; two great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Victoria Whitworth; sister, Pat Hancock of Comer, Georgia; several nieces and nephews. The family is also very grateful to Tina Tompkins for her care and love of mother for the past seven years.

Funeral services will be Saturday, December 17, 2022, 2 o'clock p.m. at the First Baptist Church Lavonia with The Reverend Chris Chitwood and The Reverend Dr. Larry Finger officiating.  Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers, Franklin Whitworth, Christopher Whitworth, Matthew Kelly, Wesley Kelly, Steven Whitworth, David Hancock, Scott Hancock and Jeff Hancock.

The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church Lavonia from 12:30 to 1:45 pm before the service. Online condolences can be made by visiting the website at www.acree-davisfh.com

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lavonia First Baptist Church, PO Box 47, Lavonia, Georgia 30553 in memory of Mrs. Rachel Whitworth.

Interment will follow in the Lavonia City Cemetery with the Acree-Davis Funeral Home and Crematory in charge of the arrangements for Mrs. Rachel Whitworth.
