Velma Lewis

Velma Lewis, age 92, of Cleveland, Georgia (formerly of Griffin, Georgia), passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 9, 2022.  Mrs. Lewis was born on April 27, 1930, in Pike County Georgia.  She was the daughter of the late John Samuel Jones and Katie Bridges Jones Self.
 
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her stepfather Alver Lovell Self; her husband of 40 years, Carl Eugene Lewis; son, Thomas Keith Lewis.  She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy Lewis Duren (Jim), Cleveland, Georgia; Carla Lewis Brown (Jeff), North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; grandsons Dustin Brown (Amber), St. Petersburg, Florida, and Lucas Brown, Atlanta, Georgia; nephew, Tim Lewis (Denise), niece, Angie DeAngelis (Dan) and several great nephews and nieces.
 
Mrs. Lewis was a former member of Faith Baptist Church, Griffin, Georgia; Orchard Hill First Baptist Church, Orchard Hill, Georgia; New Hope Baptist Church, Zebulon, Georgia; Rehoboth Baptist Church, Griffin, Georgia and Concord Baptist Church, Cumming, Georgia.  Over the years Mrs. Lewis was a faithful choir member and Women’s Missionary Union member.
 
During her senior year in high school, she won the first-place medal competing in the Georgia State “Shorthand Competition”.
 
She was a long-time employee of Griffin Grocery Company and she retired from the Office of the Clerk of Superior Court, Spalding County, Georgia after many years of service.
 
Funeral services will be conducted from the Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home, Cleveland, Georgia on Monday, December 12, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 12 noon until the hour of the service. Services will be conducted by Dr. Chuck Chambers.  Graveside services will be conducted from the Oak Hill Cemetery, Griffin, Georgia on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.
 
Our sincere thanks to extended family members, special caregiver Melanie Nelms, and the staff at Northeast Georgia Hospice. We wish to thank all our friends who walked this journey with us, helped care for our beloved mother and loved us with Christ’s love.
