Albrecht Herman Schulze

Obituary Date: Thursday, December 8, 2022

Albrecht Herman Schulze, 82, of Gainesville, passed away on November 8, 2022, unexpectedly. He was born to Rudolf and Hildegard Schulze on July 3rd, 1940, in Borna Germany, near the city of Leipzig.

He married Jutta Bender in 1963 and had two sons, Gerrit (deceased) and Stefan.  A graduate of Hamburg University’s Naval Architecture program, Albrecht worked as a naval architect and marine engineer throughout his life making significant contributions to the field.  After graduation, he brought his young family to the United States where he co-founded Cali and Associates, a naval architectural consulting firm that was among the first to apply computer-aided design to the ship building process.  The software that Albrecht wrote transformed ship fitting, eliminating the time and labor intensive custom of creating cardboard hull mock ups prior to construction.  For a period of over 20 years, almost every shipbuilder in the world used Cali and Associates software to design hulls.  In the early 1990’s Albrecht left Cali and Associates to join Lockheed Martin where he worked to integrate state of the art weapons systems into warship design.  He retired from Lockheed Martin in 2014.

Albrecht’s passion for ships extended to his personal life.  An avid sailor, Albrecht sailed most weekends with his wife and two sons, first on their Catalina 22, Rotkaeppchen, and later with their J24, Cinderella, and Beneteau, Encore.

An avid traveler, Albrecht and Jutta traveled the world, often doing so on cruise ships and boats.  Albrecht visited each of the globe’s seven continents during his life.

He was a loving husband, father, brother, and son. He is joining his mother and father, and son Gerrit.  He will be missed by his wife of 59 years, Jutta, his son Stefan, and daughters-in-law, Patti and Jill.

A memorial service will be held for Albrecht Schulze on December 11th at 2:00pm at the Lake Lanier Sailing Club, 6206 Commodore Dr., Flowery Branch, Georgia.
