Memorial Park Riverside Chapel of Gainesville, Georgia, announces the passing of Mrs. Barbara Whelchel Hendrix on December 5, 2022.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 pm Friday, December 9, 2022 at Memorial Park Riverside Chapel with interment to follow at New Bridge Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Reverend Steve Baker will officiate.
Mrs. Hendrix was born February 16, 1938 in Gainesville, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late John Ervin Whelchel and Lola Bell Lawson Whelchel. She was also preceded in death by her husband. William (Bill) Hendrix.
Barbara Whelchel Hendrix attended Riverbend Elementary School as well as Riverbend High School where she graduated in 1956. From there she attended South Georgia College where she earned her two year Associates Degree. While there, she met her future husband and life-long partner Bill Hendrix. After graduation, she moved back to Gainesville and for a brief time lived in Athens, GA. She worked for over twenty years in the Hall County Tax Commissioner’s Office from which she retired in 2001. In her retirement, she enjoyed traveling across the country visiting various point of interest throughout the United States. In addition, she was a member of Riverbend Baptist Church where she loved spending time with her Sunday School Classmates as well.
She is pre-deceased by her Parents, her husband Bill Hendrix and her brother Larry L (Pete) Lawson.
She is survived by her daughter Beth Hendrix Gorse of Jesup, GA and her husband Sandy Gorse, along with her Grandson Zack Gorse, his wife Aimee Gorse and their children Augie Gorse and Sullie Gorse and by her son Bryan Hendrix and his wife Debbie Hendrix, along with their children Jacob Hendrix and Rachel Hendrix.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law Elizabeth Whelchel and her daughter and Barbara’s niece Amy Whelchel Miller.
