William “Bill” Kooymans, 76, passed away peacefully on September 20, 2025, at his home in Gainesville, Georgia, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on December 5, 1948, in Roermond, the Netherlands, to Herman and Wilhelmina Kooymans, Bill immigrated to the United States at the age of 10 with his four siblings, carrying only a single suitcase and possessing very little knowledge of English. From those humble beginnings, he built an extraordinary life defined by hard work, faith, and devotion to his family.
As a young boy, Bill delivered newspapers by bicycle and worked at Winn-Dixie, saving enough to purchase his first motorcycle and later a Volkswagen Beetle, a humorous contrast to his 6’4” height. At 14, he met Joyce, his future wife, at Leon High School in Tallahassee, FL. Their paths crossed again at Florida State University, and they married at ages 21 and 22, building a life together in Atlanta for 54 years.
Bill’s professional journey began as an accountant in Atlanta for BDO Seidman. There, his talent and determination led him to become the youngest partner and later head of the Atlanta office. He went on to lead the mid-market division at Coopers and Lybrand and became a managing partner for PWC. Renowned for his brilliance with numbers, Bill was equally admired for his mentorship, trust-building abilities, and capacity to forge lasting friendships, inspiring many colleagues to become leaders themselves.
In 1986, Bill and Joyce purchased a lake house that quickly became a beloved gathering place for family holidays, water activities, and memorable Big Chill getaways. Despite long and demanding work hours, Bill always made time to attend his children’s games and support their interests. He taught them how to ski, tube, and drive boats, creating countless treasured memories on the water. Known for his warmth and generosity, Bill welcomed everyone with open arms, building lasting friendships with the Big Chill group, his golf buddies, and many others.
A firm believer in the power of education, he ensured his three children, grandchildren, and extended family had opportunities to pursue higher learning. He was a tireless provider and a model of dedication, showing his family that hard work and perseverance could open doors for future generations.
Bill and Joyce were true partners in life—raising a family, building businesses, traveling the world with friends, and always seeking ways to bless others. His devotion shone brightest during Joyce’s 25-year health struggle, as he relentlessly pursued the best care and brought joy to her life. They were both proud patriots and loved America. Bill actively supported causes and candidates aligned with his values, investing in a brighter future for his family.
Bill’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. A devout Catholic and follower of Jesus Christ, he looked forward with joy to eternal life in heaven and reunion with his beloved wife, Joyce.
Bill is survived by his three children, Brenna, Jessica, and Eric, as well as his unofficially adopted daughter, Colette, and 11 grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of love, faith, family, hard work, and service.
