Charles R. “Charlie” Garriott, age 75 of Gainesville, passed into eternal life on Thursday, October 27, 2022, surrounded by his family at home after a brief battle with lung cancer.
Charlie was born July 4, 1947 in Topeka, Kansas to the late Charles Lloyd and Josephine Stahl Garriott. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He graduated from Kansas State University with a Master’s Degree in Science. He also served in the United States Army from 1969-1971, when he was honorably discharged. Charlie enjoyed 37 years working in the animal health industry as a microbiologist. He held various positions from quality assurance manager to director of manufacturing and finally as international technical liaison with Merial Select.
In his retirement, he loved spending time with his wife of 47 years, daughters, and grandchildren, having lunch with the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out), playing bridge with dear friends, participating in his men’s Bible study, and rocking newborns at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he was cared for in his final weeks. He was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Gainesville where he was a prayerful and faithful advocate for the unborn.
Charlie was preceded in death by his brother, Tom Art; sister, Carolyn Zeller; brothers in law, Leo Leiker and Tom Dudney, and other beloved family members. Left to cherish precious memories are his wife, Maggie Garriott; daughters, Michelle (Bill) Wright & Elizabeth (Luke) Beverly; grandchildren William Wright & Anna Claire, Palmer, & Preston Beverly; sisters, Mary Jo Leiker & Helen Dudney; brother-in-law, Bob Zeller; sister-in-law, Doris Art Dahlstrom; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The Funeral Mass for Charlie will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 31 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Fr. Tim Hepburn officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00–5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2022 at Ward’s Funeral Home.
