John Howard Harris

Obituary Date: Friday, September 23, 2022

The Lord called John Howard Harris home on September 23, 2022, after serving 79 years on the Lord’s Battlefield.

John was born on April 4, 1943, in Gainesville, GA to the late Delma McCann Ware and John Harris. He attended Fair Street School. He was a member of The New Salem Baptist Church. John worked at Pilgrim Pride (Con-Agra) for many years before retiring. John was a great Husband, Father, Grandfather, Papa and genuinely loved his family. He loved to travel to the beach with his family, doing word searches and watching black and white movies; Gun Smoke, Andy Griffith, Lone Ranger, Rifleman, Wagon Train, Bonanza, Perry Mason and Roy Rogers (just to name a few). He loved cooking his “famous Pinto Beans” and most of all watching his favorite football team The Dallas Cowboys. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that he had touched in some way throughout his life.

John is preceded in death by his parents, Delma (Boots) McCann Ware and John (Jennie) Harris, one brother Leroy Randolph and four sisters, Annie Lois Ware Thomas, Joanne Ware, Janet K.Ware and Doris A. Ware. Mother-In-Law, Mattie Pearl Maddox Lott; Brother-In-Law, Paul Maddox, Robert Harold Maddox.

John’s celebration of life will be remembered by his loving wife of 56 years, Mattie Lee Harris, two caring daughters, Denise Harris, and Sabrina Harris. Two attentive granddaughters Ebone Fortson and Jasmine Fortson and two beautiful great-granddaughters, Jayda Johnson, and Journe Johnson. His Siblings, Herschel Wells, Jerald (Pete) Ware, Brenda Mize all of Gainesville,GA.; Bernice Ware of Decatur, GA.; Michael (Janet) Ware of Griffin GA.; John (Mary Alice) Harris of Atlanta, GA. Brother-In-Law, Willie (Lisa) Maddox, Allen (Diane) Maddox, Terry (Landa) Maddox, Tim (Barbara) Maddox, Donald (Sherry) Maddox, Rev. Calvin Maddox all of Gainesville GA. A special niece/daughter Traci Knight, a close friend Don Carter and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

The visitation for Mr. Harris will be held Friday, September 30th between the hours of 12-8pm, the family will receive between the hours of 6-8pm at Wimberly Funeral Home. The Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 1st at Antioch Baptist Church at the hour of 1pm. Professional Services Entrusted to Wimberly Funeral Home.
