John Rufus Gober, 79 of Gainesville passed away on Tuesday September 6, 2022 at his home after a long battle with progressive supranucler palsy.
Born September 30, 1942 to the late John Benton and Ruby Gober of Dawsonville, Ga. John moved to Gainesville in 1970 after marrying the love of his life Mary Townley Gober. There they raised 4 daughters that he loved and cherished. He was a wonderful Father and Papa John.
John was of the Baptist faith and a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church. He was a good honest, hardworking christian man, and a pillar in his community. John will always be remembered as a man of few words, but when he spoke, it hits the target.
John was a master carpenter. He owned John Gober Construction and was a sub-contractor for Venture Construction until 1994. In 1994 he became an employee of Venture Construction until he retired. John had a love for farming. He and his wife Mary raised chickens for Wayne Farms in which they won many grower of the year, grower of the month, and 7 lb chicken awards. They also raised beef cattle.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Teresa Miller, father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clyde and Louise Townley, brother-in-law, Dean Townley and sister-in-law, Martha Talley.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Mary Gober, Gainesville, daughters, Cheryl Allen, Gainesville, Trudy Gober, Dawsonville, Sheree (Gary) Elliott, Murrayville. Grandchildren, Jennifer (Curtis) Stover, Ellijay, Kyle Miller, Dawsonville, Haley Johnson, Gainesville. Great Grandchildren, Lannah and Emma Stover, Nathan and Noah Johnson, and Liam Baldwin. Sister, Jane (James) Swafford, Dawsonville, special cousin, Diane Bishop. Sister-in-laws, Ruby Graham, Gainesville, Nadine (Ralph) Crumley, Gainesville, brother-in-law, James Townley, Gainesville. A number of nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
Funeral services will be held Sunday September 11, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at Cool Springs Baptist Church. Rev. Darin Cain, Rev. Cecil Townley and Rev. Chris York will officiate. Interment will follow in the Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Little & Davenport Funeral Home Saturday September 10 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
