Mrs. Lynette Avery Drew, 93, of Clarkesville, Georgia, passed away peacefully in her home at Graceful Care, Sunday, July 17, 2022. She was born in Mt. Vernon, Georgia, to the late Ernest Lee Avery, Sr. and Lucile Scarborough Avery. She was a graduate of Brewton-Parker Junior College and Georgia Teachers College. Her teaching career began in Montgomery County, then continued in Columbus and Fitzgerald, and she completed her career in Habersham County at Hazel Grove Elementary. She reached emeritus status with Georgia Retired Teachers Association.
She enjoyed reading, gardening, and sewing. One of her greatest and most rewarding activities was volunteer work in the community through First Baptist Church Cornelia, where she was a faithful member for over sixty years.
Her family is grateful for the kind and attentive care given by Grace Higgins and staff at Graceful Care for the past year and a half.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Drew is preceded in death by her loving husband, James Richard Drew; brother, Hugh Avery, Sr. and his wife, Doris; and sister, Undine Fortner, and her husband, James.
Her surviving family includes daughters and sons-in-law, Debi and Jeff Godwin of Demorest, and Beth and Charles Haney of Madison; granddaughter and husband, Heather and Daniel Eley, and great-grandchildren, Barrett Warren Eley and Isabelle Avery Eley, of Melbourne, Florida; brother, E.L. Avery, Jr. and his wife, Nanette, of Vidalia; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friend, Sue Wood.
A graveside service for the family is being planned with burial to be at Northview Cemetery in Dublin, Georgia.
