Dr. Lynnea J. Halberg

Dr. Lynnea J. Halberg of Gainesville passed away Sunday March 27, 2022.  Lynnea was born in Springfield, Illinois on September 3, 1943, to the late LeRoy and Betty Halberg.

She was a 34-year resident of Gainesville, Georgia and served as Vice President for Student Affairs and Professor of Education at Brenau University in Gainesville from 1988-2005.

After graduating from Springfield High School in Springfield, Illinois, Lynnea earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern Illinois University, a Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois and a Doctorate in Student Development in Post-Secondary Education from the University of Iowa. Prior to her years at Brenau, Lynnea’s career in higher education included administrative work at the University of Iowa, Coe College, Southern Seminary Junior College and Blackburn College.

She was an active member of the American College Personnel Association, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, Georgia College Personnel Association, and the American Association of University Women.  Lynnea received numerous awards and national recognition for her work in the field of student development.

Lynnea was active in various civic organizations.  Her community service work included Rape Response Inc., Human Relations Council, Humane Society, Meals on Wheels, and the United Way.  She was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include her brother, Lee (Debra) Halberg of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, nephews Derek Halberg (Christy Johnson) of Wake Forest, North Carolina and Evan Halberg of Columbia, Missouri, great- nephew, Caden Halberg and great- niece Nora Halberg of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and several cousins.  Lynnea is also survived by her best friend and travel companion Darlene Biggers.

Lynnea’s family wants to acknowledge and sincerely thank the many people who have been so important in her life: her Gainesville health care providers; her many wonderful care managers and staff at the Dogwood Forest/Gardens Assisted Living Community; her Brenau colleagues, students, administration, and support staff and her many personal and professional friends.

Memorials can be made to any charity, organization, or school of your choice in memory of Lynnea.  Her wishes were to be laid to rest in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois.
