Michael O. Murphy passed away March 5, 2022 in Flowery Branch, GA. He was born August 6th 1955 in Pensacola, Florida. He joined the Navy at the young age of 17 as a Radioman. Michael served in the Navy from 1973 to 1994 retiring as a Chief Petty Officer.
While serving, he met the love of his life Diana, who he married September 24, 1988. Their adventures together spanned the globe, from Hong Kong to Iceland and everywhere in between. They eventually settled in Georgia where Michael completed his 20 year teaching career at West Hall Middle School. Michael inspired numerous young minds teaching two of his favorite subjects, math and social studies.
Michael had a love for all things pop culture, which spanned far and wide. He knew every bit of John Wayne trivia and loved telling people that James T Kirk was the best Star Trek captain. Michael loved watching history and travel shows, sharing his personal experiences as well. He also was a gamer, particularly loving any game that he could come back to after losing many times. Michael especially enjoyed any conversation regarding history, travel or pop culture while drinking his many cups of coffee.
Michael had a passion for woodworking. His talent shined in so many of his projects at home and his fulfilling work in the lumber department at Home Depot post retirement. Michael also built many strong and lasting friendships with all the friends and loved ones who will always hold him in their heart.
He is survived by his wife Diana; his children Stefanie, Brandon, and Kristin (David); his grandchild Grayson; his siblings Shawn (Christy), Jim, Linda (Steve), Patricia (Patrick), sister in law Joy (Ronnie), brother in law Dennis, brother in law, Francis (Aleisha), brother in law Samuel (Glenda) and a large extended family of beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and loved ones for visitation on Friday March 11th from 6:00-8:00pm at Memorial Park in Gainesville GA. The funeral service will also be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Saturday March 12th at 11:00am. Immediately following the service, lunch will be served at the funeral home. Family and friends are also welcome at the family home to visit and share their memories about Michael.
