Charlie Cason Farr

Obituary Date: Friday, January 7, 2022

Charlie Cason Farr, age 96, passed away on Friday, January 7th in his home of 52 years.  Charlie was known by many in Gainesville as their pharmacist as he practiced the profession in this community until he was 90 years old.  He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was known for his sly sense of humor, his warm smile and his generosity.

Charlie was born in 1925 to Milton Farr Sr. and Georgia Pearl Cason Farr in Thomson, Georgia.  He grew up working on his father’s farm and shared stories about farm chores such as milking cows. He graduated from Thomson High School and then the Southern School of Pharmacy in Atlanta, later known as Mercer University.  Charlie moved to Gainesville in 1947 and worked at Whatley’s Pharmacy on the Square.  He married Joan Cronic in 1955, and they had two sons, Cason and Harrison.

In 1976, Charlie opened his own pharmacy, Farr’s Prescription Shop, across from the Northeast Georgia Medical Center and served the community there until he sold the store in 1998.  He continued to work as a pharmacist at Riverside Pharmacy and McElveen’s Pharmacy until he finally retired in 2015.  Charlie was also a member of the Elks and Lions Clubs of Gainesville for more than 50 years and was a generous supporter of many charitable organizations.  He was a fan of opera and classical music and loved reading a newspaper from cover to cover.

Charlie is preceded in death by wife, Joan, his parents and five siblings.  He is survived by his younger sisters, Madelyn Farr Golomb and Carolyn Farr Mackay; his two sons, Cason (Cindy) Farr and Harrison (Shannon) Farr; and three grandchildren, Tanner Farr, Mary Hampton Farr and McLendon Farr.  He will also be missed by his brother-in-law, Jon Cronic, who he had a longstanding tradition of eating lunch with every Wednesday at Longstreet Café, and his nephew, Thad (Christy) Cronic, and niece, Christy Cronic.  The family would like to thank Miriam Gruwell of Helping Hands who helped care for Charlie for the past 5 years.

The family will receive visitors at the Little-Davenport Funeral Home in Gainesville from 4 to 6pm on Thursday.  A funeral service will be held at Gainesville First Baptist Chapel on Friday at 2pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the Jo Farr Scholarship Fund.  The fund was set up in memory of Charlie’s wife, a longtime Gainesville High teacher, to help selected Gainesville graduates with college expenses. Checks can be made to the North Georgia Community Foundation with a memo line for the Jo Farr Scholarship Fund and mailed to 615 Oak Street, Suite 1300, Gainesville, Georgia, 30501.  Donations can also be made online at www.ngcf.org/donate by selecting the Jo Farr Scholarship Fund.
