Douglas Wayne O’Neal, age 77 of Dahlonega, Georgia, passed away peacefully at his home January 2, 2022, following a period of declining health.
Doug was born September 5, 1944, in Moultrie, Georgia to the late Odella Williams and Charles J.O’Neal. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He was employed for many years in the metro Atlanta Area as a real estate appraiser. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyedhunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a gourmet chef, and a skilled craftsman who created many beautiful woodwork pieces.
Doug’s faith was very important to him, and he was an active member of Dahlonega Baptist Church, servingthroughout the years as a Deacon and a member of the Safety team. He had a generous heart and a strong compassion for those in need and served in two areasnear and dear to his heart: the Benevolence ministryand There’s Hope for the Hungry food ministry.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Gloria Carver O’Neal, son Douglas (Michelle) O’Neal, and stepsons Jeff (Sally) Gunter and David (Kace) Gunter, along with 10 grandchildren who lovingly called him Papa: Ashelyn, Kedron and Reese O’Neal; Emily, Jake and Georgia Gunter; and Judah, Ezra, Jolene and Everly Gunter. He is also survived by his sister, Delores Taylor, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and loved ones at Dahlonega Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 5th from 4 to 6 p.m.
A service to celebrate Doug’s life will be held on Thursday, January 6th at Dahlonega Baptist Church at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The Benevolence Fund at Dahlonega Baptist Church, 234 Hawkins Street, Dahlonega, Georgia 30533.
