John Raleigh Tanner

Mr. John Raleigh Tanner, age 79, of Clermont, GA, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021, at Satilla Memorial Health Hospital in Waycross, GA. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2021, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Gainesville with interment at the Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville, GA. Dr. Bruce Morgan and Dr. Ron Grizzle will officiate.  The family will receive friends from Noon leading up to the service at 2:00 PM and a reception will be held during this time. Raleigh was born on January 8, 1942, in Gainesville, GA to Etheleene Leathers Tanner and Bonnie Bell Tanner.  He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia, served 27 years in the US Army as a recruiter and retention non-commissioned officer, and also worked 27 years for the Department of Public Health in Washington, D.C. as his second career as a contracting officer.  He was a past Master of the Atlanta Masonic Lodge No. 59.

Survivors Include, his wife of 39 years, Phyllis Jackson Tanner (Boots); sister, Marcia Tanner Lance (Wayne) of Washington, GA; nieces: Kim Lance Sproull (Ralph) of Ellijay, GA, Amanda Jackson of Buckhead, GA, Tabitha Jackson and Katrina Barber (Drew) of Blackshear, GA; nephews: Thomas Jackson of Blackshear, GA, Alan Wayne Lance (Julia) of Marietta, GA; brothers-in-law Vince Jackson (Teressa) of Blackshear, GA and John Jackson (Gloria) of Winston, GA. Memorials can be made in Raleigh’s name to the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church, Gainesville, Ga.
