James L. Hughes

Obituary Date: Thursday, December 2, 2021

James L. Hughes, age 78, of Cumming, GA passed away on Thursday, December 2, 2021.  He was born in Ariton, Alabama to the late Wesley and Lois Hughes, but lived most of his life in Cumming.

James attended Forsyth County High School and went on to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology.  After his sophomore year, he joined the United States Army and served during the Vietnam war. Upon his discharge, he returned to Georgia and met Linda, the love of his life for almost 52 years.

Early in James’ career he worked with his father as a builder.  He, his father and brothers helped to build Bethelview United Methodist Church in Cumming where James and Linda were later married.  He spent many years with Flowers Industries and ended his long career with AT&T.  He loved to read and was a life-long learner.  He picked up tidbits of information wherever he could find them from the backs of cereal boxes to “how to videos” on YouTube.  He enjoyed playing games with his grandchildren and the daily errand rides with Linda.

James and Linda have attended Northpoint Church for many years.  “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you” and we are so very grateful for his life and the love he gave to us.  We will miss him deeply until we are together again.

He is preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law J. Harold and Ola Reid; brother Henry B. Hughes; brothers-in-law Richard Anderson, E.H. Reid, Sonny Reid, Glenn Reid, Ralph Cowart, Jim Pirkle; sisters-in-law Louise Reid, Betty Reid, Judy Field; and niece Lynn Anderson.

He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Reid Hughes; children Julie (Chris) McCoy and Jeremy (Leslie) Hughes; grandchildren Cooper, Carson, Haley, and Mallorie; siblings Gene (Brenda) Hughes; Michael (Jimmie Lou) Hughes, Nina Anderson, Marilyn (Donald) Stone, and Ann Hughes; brothers and sisters-in-law Gail Hughes, Doug Reid, Jeannie (Jack) Hartman, JoAnn Cowart, Ruth Pirkle, Dow (Joyce) Reid, Becky (Tom) Dunnagan, and Diane Martin; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 9, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at Ingram Funeral Home Chapel in Cumming, GA with Rev.
