Lougene Carnes Loehr

Obituary Date: Thursday, November 18, 2021

Lougene Carnes Loehr went to meet her savior on November 18, 2022 at Morningside Assisted Living facility surrounded by family and friends.  Lougene was born on November 26, 1937 in Franklin County, Carnesville, Georgia.  She was proceeded in death by her husband Roy D. Loehr, Jr., whom she married in 1959.  She was the only daughter of the late Frank and Lucy Payne Carnes.  She had two brothers: the late L. C. Carnes (sister-in-law Mary Etta Carnes) and the late Freddy Carnes (sister-in-law Susie Dove Carnes).  She is survived by her daughters: Denise Loehr Touch (Roswell, GA) and Angela Loehr Merek (Cumming, Ga); sons-in-law: Richard Touch and Joe Merek, brother-in-law Clay Loehr and many nieces and nephews.

Lougene was a woman with an active and vibrant faith and a loving and strong commitment to her family and community.  She was a member of Montgomery Baptist Church with a prior membership at Air Line Baptist Church and Harmony Hall Baptist Church.  She served on many committees including Women’s Missionary Union as Director, Food Service Committee, Senior Adult Leader, and Church Decorating Committee.  She also worked tirelessly to direct and host many weddings and receptions for church members and friends.  Roy and Lougene were avid campers with North Georgia campers.  She loved sharing her faith and her joy of doing crafts, silk flower arranging, oil painting, and flower/vegetable gardening with family and friends.  She continued those activities during her retirement years and until her death worked within her Assisted Living facility to share her faith, support community activities, and support other residents.  Lougene’s zest for life, positive attitude, dynamic faith and love for others will be sorely missed by all those who knew her.

Lougene attended elementary and high school in Franklin County, Carnesville, GA.  She was the first in her parent’s families to attend college, graduating with an Associate Degree from Reinhardt College in Waleska, GA.  She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Georgia State College for Women (GSCW).  Lougene continued to expand her education attending North Georgia College throughout her career.

In 1960, she began her career teaching in Jefferson Elementary School; moving to Tadmore Elementary in Hall County in 1962 where she continued for 28 years, retiring in June 1994.  While teaching at Tadmore she served as the primary grade chairman, scheduling students in the primary program, and implemented new math and the Title VII program.  She loved her students and investing time in teaching and supporting them.

Lougene served on many committees at Tadmore and in Hall County.  She was honored by her peers as Teacher of the Year for Tadmore in 1971, 1974, and 1982.  In 1997 she was honored to be chosen as Star Teacher for a former third grade student.  Lougene felt one of the highest honor’s she received was when former students called to request that she teach their child in the third grade or when she was able to help a child with their special needs.
