James Herman Mize

Obituary Date: Sunday, November 14, 2021

James Herman Mize, of Sautee, loving husband, father, grandfather, passed away peacefully Sunday, November 14, 2021. He was 85 years old. Born on April 14, 1936, to Ross and Hallie Mize, Herman spent his childhood in Cleveland, Georgia. He met his sweetheart, Nancy Helton, in their hometown. They married in 1958 and spent 38 years together.

Herman worked throughout his youth, and he entered the Army in the winter of 1959. The following two years, he was stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington. This was a period he was proud of and loved to look back on. When he returned to Cleveland, he started what would be his life-long career in the lumber business. For nearly 50 years, he worked as an owner-operator of Mize Lumber Company.

In addition to his passion for his work, Herman loved spending time in the woods or with a book. He had immense curiosity about US history and was ready to share what he was reading with a willing listener. After retiring, Herman found much joy working in his yard, spending time with his great-grandchildren, and watching them play sports. He never liked to miss a game.

Herman loved his family and will be tremendously missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife, Nancy Helton Mize, his grandson, Matthew Mize, his brothers, Charles, Gene, and Lee, and sisters, Winnie Mize and Mary Underwood. He is survived by his children, Teri and Terry Sims, Randy Mize, Greg Mize and partner, Michelle, his siblings, Shirley Fain, Gerald and Tammy Mize, his grandchildren, Candace Mize Wright, Dylan Sims, and Jessica Sims, and his great-grandchildren, Hallie, Cade, Henley, and Emmy Lou.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 A.M. Wednesday, November 17, 2021 from the Chapel of Barrett Funeral Home. Rev. Marc Turner will officiate.  Interment will follow in Mt. Yonah Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 P.M. Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at the funeral home.

The family will accept flowers, or contributions may be made to White County Family Promise: P.O. Box 905 Cleveland, GA 30528.
