Melvin Green of Gainesville, GA and a resident of Lanier Village Estates, passed away during the evening of Friday, October 1, 2021.
Melvin was born on May 1, 1931 at Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1948 then earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1953 From Cornell University and was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. He later obtained his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Temple University.
Melvin joined the US Air Force as a 1st Lieutenant in where he earned the National Defense Service Medal and was released from active service in 1956, continuing to serve in the US Air Force reserves, achieving the rank of Major and being honorably discharged in 1970. He also earned his Private Pilot’s license in 1955.
Melvin was employed for forty years by the E. I. du Pont de Nemours company as an engineer across several plants in New Jersey, Indiana, Texas as well as the corporate offices in Delaware. His work encompassed electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineering processes, and included consultations in the Far East in Singapore and Japan.
In retirement Melvin was chairman of the Safety, Security and Parking committee for the inaugural Hilton Head Island Concours D’Elegance Classic Automobile Shows in 2002 and 2003.
Melvin met the love of his life, Doris Renee Cholerton whom he married in Philadelphia, PA on November 23, 1957. After honeymooning in Hawaii, their favorite vacation paradise of all, they spent the following 63 years enjoying life, raising a family and travelling to many places around the world. They forged many close and lifelong friendships. Melvin was introduced to Doris by a friend who described him as “a real nice guy”. He was a true family man who always put us all first and gave lifelong direction and guidance. His wife Doris would often lovingly refer to him as “My Guy”.
He lived his life with a smile, a great sense of humor, and always had at the ready a funny greeting for whomever he would meet. Melvin especially enjoyed listening to classical music, watching football, or sipping on an Old-Fashioned drink with his wife or with their friends. Many of his most cherished times were when he and Doris visited Hawaii, played piano with the Music Makers at Lanier, and spending holidays, graduations and other special events with their children and grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Morris and Florence Green. He is survived by his wife, Doris Renee Green, son, Lyle Green, and his wife, Beverly, daughter, Alison Green, and her fiancée, Richard Allen and five grandchildren; Christopher Green, Kelly Green, Brandon Floyd, Kristen Floyd, and Lauren Floyd King.
