Mary Helen Jones Gibbs, age 92, passed away peacefully in her home October 5, 2021.
She was born May 19, 1929 in the Nacoochee Valley of White County, and was raised by John Freeman and Nancy Laura Jones in Lula, GA.
Mary Helen was not only smart - graduating as valedictorian of Lula High School - but a true beauty as well. While visiting Gainesville, her beautiful black hair caught the eye of Jimmy Douglas Gibbs and they were wed on September 24, 1949. After 64 years of marriage and always lovingly referred to as “my Bride”, Mary Helen lost her Marine sweetheart, J.D. She is also preceded in death by son, Doug (Riva) Gibbs. She is survived by her daughter, Vickie (Rich) White, and son, Scott (Jennifer) Gibbs. J.D. and Mary Helen were blessed with grandchildren Davis White,(Amy), Russell White, (Bex), Zachary Gibbs, Jason Gibbs, Jefferson Gibbs, and David Gibbs. She is also survived by great grandchildren Lauren, Lindsay, Maxwell, and Harrison White. She leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews along with treasured family friends Linda Argue Peterson and Steve Doucette.
Mary Helen was a wonderful homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and quite the cook! Fried chicken, peanut butter fudge, cream cheese pound cake, banana pudding, and lemon icebox pie were just a few of her specialties. She will be remembered by all for her loyalty, her spunk and the unconditional love she had for her family.
The family would like to express our utmost gratitude to her wonderful caregivers, Donna Even and Linda Smith for their loving care that made it possible for Mary Helen to stay in the home she loved.
A Graveside service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, October 8, 2021 at Alta Vista Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, we would like you to remember Mary Helen with donations to Sisu, Integrated Early Learning 8960 Murphy Blvd, Gainesville, GA 30504 or Thumbs Up Mission 1242 Industrial Blvd. Gainesville, GA 30501
