Charles Eugene Cloer

Obituary Date: Friday, September 17, 2021

Charles Eugene Cloer, age 86, of Cleveland, passed away on Friday, September 17, 2021.

Mr. Cloer was born on October 14, 1934, in Dalton, Georgia to the late John Rembert and Maggie Louisa Beaver Cloer. He was the youngest of 11 children. He was preceded in death by his infant siblings Laura and Jewel Cloer; his brothers Bill, Dillard, John, and Buddy Cloer; his sisters Pirlean Hooker, Eva Lois Davenport Willis, Iona Holman, and Louise Holman; and his daughter Glenda Hunt.

He was known by many different names and answered to all of them: Charlie, Gene, Uncle Gene, Granddaddy, Grampa Charlie, Papa Charlie, The Sears Man, Mr. Fix-It, Black Ford Ranger Guy, and Daddy. He was a firecracker, but he always had a smile on his face and a kind word to share the majority of his life.

He joined the United States Army in 1957, and would tell how he was in Germany at the same time Elvis was there between 1957 and 1959. After returning to the United States, he transferred to the Army Reserves. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of Sergeant in 1963. He worked for his older brother, John, fixing appliances in California from 1959 to 1962.

When he returned to Georgia in 1962, he worked for Sears, Roebuck, and Co. as a service technician until he retired in 1990.  He was well known throughout the area as 'the Sears Man' and came to White County on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays for service calls.  Coincidentally, if one of his daughters happened to not be at school on one of those days because they were at home, "sick", he would stop by Ma Gooch's and pick them up something for lunch along with a slice of chocolate pie.

In his younger days, his hobbies were racing cars, riding motorcycles, going "stump-jumping", going to Road Atlanta, and watching wrestling.

As he got older, he enjoyed showing off his Ford Ranger at car shows while having the opportunity to visit with his extended car show family and friends and admire their cars.

In the past decade, he could usually be found in the mornings enjoying coffee and a blueberry cake donut at Cleveland Donuts, and in the afternoons at Dairy Queen.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Linda Baugh Cloer; daughters and sons in law, Carol and Kevin Franks, Christy and Robert Wilcox; stepson and daughter in law Corey and Ashley Hyde; son in law Ricky Jo Hunt; best friend, Johnny Hyde; mother of his daughters, Kathleen Cloer; grandchildren Andrea (George) Evans, Heather (Kyle) Grindle, Cliff Davenport, Alexander Wilcox, Maxwell Wilcox, Taylor Hyde, Addi Grace Hyde, Caleb Hyde; 10 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services are scheduled for 11 AM Monday, September 20, 2021 at Mt. View Baptist Church Cemetery on Tesnatee Gap Valley Rd. in Cleveland.  Rev. Dave Fortner will officiate.
