Harold Long

Obituary Date: Wednesday, September 15, 2021

Dr. Harold G. Long, age 88, passed away on September 15, 2021, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Hospice Unit. He was born in Akron, Ohio, to Luke and Minnie Long. In 1936, the family moved to Dahlonega, Georgia.

Dr. Long lived in Dahlonega for most of his life before moving to Murrayville for the last ten years. He spent five years at The Oaks at Limestone, where he was well-loved.

He graduated from Lumpkin County High School in 1950, the University of North Georgia in 1954, and The Medical College of Georgia in 1958. He married Marijo Williams in 1959 and was happily married until she died in 2005. He and Marijo were a lifelong team. Dr. Long loved the practice of medicine and was the epitome of a country doctor. He practiced medicine in Dahlonega for 37 years before moving his office to Murrayville where he practiced for five more years. Harold made house calls throughout Lumpkin, Dawson, White, Hall, and Union Counties for 42 years until he retired. He estimated that he delivered a thousand babies during his practice. He was always more concerned about the health of his neighbor than building up a business. He loved making house calls to the far reaches of north Georgia.

Harold was a lifelong sports fanatic and an avid Atlanta Braves and Georgia Bulldogs fan. He spent his favorite summer evenings watching the Braves and then the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoons.

Harold was a lifelong Christian who helped many people in need. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dahlonega before moving to Murrayville where he became a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his son, Dr. Jody Long, LCSW of Jacksonville, Alabama; grandsons, Chris and Tate Long; daughter, Ellyn Baggett of Atlanta; and granddaughters Caitlyn and Anna Baggett.

A memorial service for Dr. Long will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday, September 26, 2021, in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. A private interment will be held at Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 PM until the service hour at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association.
