Frances Miller Haynes, 106, of Gainesville passed away July 15, 2021 surrounded by her family.
She was born in Oglethorpe County, GA to Elijah W. and L.E. Cunningham Johnson. Mrs. Haynes earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Education from the University of Georgia, and began her teaching career in the 1930’s. For more than 40 years, she taught elementary school in Comer, Athens and Americus, with her last 12 years spent at the Candler Street School in Gainesville. While in Gainesville, Mrs. Haynes served as a teacher, principal and retired as the assistant superintendent of Hall County Schools. For her 100th birthday, she was honored with a celebration in the Candler Street School building.
Mrs. Haynes is predeceased by her first husband, John C. Miller; her second husband, F. Joe Haynes, Jr.; and sisters Elizabeth Crowley and Lusarah McConnell, all of Gainesville. She is survived by her nephews, Jim Crowley, his wife, Lucy, and Billy Crowley of Gainesville; grand-niece Carlton Gansereit and great-grandneice Anna Catherine Gansereit, of Atlanta; stepson Harrison Haynes and his wife, Kathy; step-grandson John Haynes, his wife Ashley, sons, Pierce and Wade; step-granddaughter Brooke Haynes Smallwood and daughters, Bentley, Kennedy and Lilly, all of Gainesville.
Mrs. Haynes was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was a founding member of the Azalea Garden Club, member of the Chattahoochee Country Club and belonged to numerous bridge clubs.
Mrs. Haynes was well known around Gainesville for her beautiful gardens, love for her children, finesse at bridge and her amazing vitality.
Memorial Park Funeral Home Riverside Dr., Gainesville, GA is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive guests at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 18, 2021. The service will be held in the Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel at 3:00 p.m. with internment to follow at Alta Vista Cemetery.
