Commander David Ross Markey, USCG Ret., passed away suddenly on July 2, 2021.
He was born in Canton, Ohio April 8, 1935 to Marjorie and Edward Markey. He graduated from Upper Sandusky High School, Upper Sandusky, Ohio. He was a 1957 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and served in the Coast Guard for 20 years, retiring in 1977. He belonged to the Coast Guard Auxiliary, after retirement, for more than 20 years. He joined the Lake Lanier Rowing Club after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and was a member until his death. He was also a volunteer Referee for the sport of Rowing.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Faye; Brother and Sister-in-Law Frank and Carol Markey, Marion, Ohio; Mother-in-Law Dot Johnson, Gainesville, GA; Sister-in-Law and Brother-in-Law Rhonda and Don Contreras, Royston, GA; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Gainesville, GA on July 20, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Coast Guard Mutual Assistance or Lake Lanier Rowing Club.
