On Friday, April 24th, 2020 Joel Chester Rogers, Sr., loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 81. Joel was born on January 5th, 1939 in Cleveland, Ga to Chester and Willie Mae (Holcomb) Rogers. He graduated from Cleveland High School where he was a member of the first football team, despite not knowing what a football was. This would later become one of his favorite memories to joke about. He married Susan Trotter on January 13, 1960. They raised two children, a son, Joel Rogers, Jr. (Lara), and a daughter, Rita Rogers McCollum (Chris), and had seven grandchildren. Joel was a member of First Baptist Church, Cleveland GA, where he served as a deacon, and later a member of First Baptist Church, Geneva AL.
He spent much of his life working at Nix Hardware as a salesman, repairing appliances for local families, and later owning Rogers Heating and Air. After moving to Geneva, AL 13 years ago, he found Geneva Hardware, where he later enjoyed working and getting to know the people of Geneva. Joel and his wife have lived for the past 3 months in LaCombe, LA with their daughter.
Joel was preceded in death by his father, Chester, mother, Willie May, and his sister, Hannah Miller (Howard). He is survived by his wife Susan, his two children, Joel and Rita, his seven grandchildren, Thomas Rogers, Noah Rogers, Sarah Rogers, Dakota McCollum, Bailey McCollum, Brooklyn McCollum, and Dixon McCollum. He is also survived by one Aunt, Flora Bell Rogers, his loving sister and brother, Robbie Satterfield (Ray) and Carl Rogers (Linda), as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joel enjoyed working, repairing just about anything, spending time with family and friends, and being around people in general. He never met a stranger.
Memorial services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Sunday, June 27, 2021 at Cleveland First Baptist Church.
