John Edward Driscoll

Obituary Date: Sunday, June 13, 2021

John Edward Driscoll passed away on the morning of June 13, 2021 at a medical facility in Bartow County Georgia, with his son, Sean, by his side.

John was born to Edward G. Driscoll (1914-1985) and Teresa F. McLay Driscoll (1917-1992) in Rome, New York on March 21, 1946. He grew up in Yonkers, NY and attended Christ the King K-8 School. He then went on to Sacred Heart High School, from which he graduated in 1964.

John was a member of the Boy Scouts of America throughout elementary and high school. During his high school years he worked summers as a chef through Boy Scouts of America at Camp Carpenter in Manchester, NH. There, his love for cooking blossomed as he advanced his culinary skills. He loved cooking for his family, and that love came through in every bite in the dishes he prepared.

Following high school, John attended Iona College in New Rochelle, NY as well as Centenary College in Shreveport, LA.

John was also a member of the United States Air Force, serving from 1967-1969. He served in Vietnam spending time at several bases including Da Nang and Bien Hoa.

Upon leaving the Air Force, John was hired by AT&T who recognized his outstanding and advanced technical skills, highlighted by his exemplary military service. He worked there until his retirement in 1997.

While working at AT&T he met the love of his life, Maria V. Hessenius, whom he went on to marry and have three wonderful children with. Their time together was cut short as Maria passed away from breast cancer in September of 2005. John was faithfully by her side until the very end, and his enduring love for her was evident until his last breath. Their children take some solace in knowing they have been reunited finally in God’s Heavenly Kingdom.

John is survived by his children Meghan Driscoll Celio (Frank) of Mansfield, MA; Christel Driscoll Lay (Christopher) of Ball Ground, GA; and Sean Driscoll of Chamblee, GA. John will also be missed by his grandchildren Madison, Kayla, Jacob, and Dylan.

He will also be remembered by his brothers-in-law Georg Hessenius (Anna) of Cumming, GA; and Tony Tamilio of Montrose, NY; in addition to his niece Tara Tamilio Mitchell (Rick) and their sons Thomas and Devon of Poughkeepsie, NY.

John is also survived by his brother Edward J. Driscoll of South Salem, NY. His sister MaryAlice Driscoll Hickey (James T.) of Syracuse, NY formerly South Salem, NY.

He also leaves behind his nieces Colleen Hickey of Cross River, NY; Julianna Hickey Hebert (Andrew) of Fayetteville, NY; Louise Driscoll Nyemchek (Frank) of Yonkers, NY; and Aislinn Driscoll of Fayetteville, NC.
