Mrs. Polly Jordan Trexler, age 100 of Toccoa passed away Saturday, May 29, 2021 at her residence.
A daughter of the late Enoch P. and Clifford Boswell Jordan, she was born September 19, 1920 in Molena, Georgia. She studied to be a Latin and English Teacher but never used that course study during her teaching career. According to Mrs. Trexler, “World War II came along and they needed people who could type and knew shorthand so she did this during the war and what she taught afterwards.” She met the love of her life, Lonnie Trexler in 1945. They would later marry and move to Toccoa in 1953 where her husband landed a job with Coats and Clark. At that time, she started teaching business, accounting and shorthand at Stephens County High School and would later teach the same subjects at North Georgia Tech after she retired from teaching at Stephens County High School. According to a recent article, Mrs. Trexler stated that she had taught about 15,000 to 20,000 during her lifetime.
She and her husband joined the First United Methodist church upon coming to Toccoa where she remains a member 66 years later. She worked in a variety of volunteer posts at the church including service on the education committee, president of the UMW, chairwoman of the Altar Guild, chairwoman of the worship and stewardship committees, board of trustees and secretary of the administrative board. She was on the building committee when the Cheek Fellowship Hall was constructed in the early 1990s. She was an accomplished pianist, and often played at church. She taught herself to type and discovered that the best typing students were those who had studied music. Her husband’s nickname for her was “Pee Wee.”. She was a staunch republican. As she celebrated her 100th birthday in September of 2020, she stated “I would not do anything different. God’s love has been so wonderful to me. God is my best friend.”
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Trexler in 2005 and by two brothers, Enoch Jordan, Jr. and Dan Jordan.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
