Hubert Gary Stamey

Obituary Date: Tuesday, April 13, 2021

Hubert Gary Stamey, age 72, of Cleveland, Georgia passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. Gary was born on July 18, 1948 in Gainesville, Georgia to the late Hubert and Betty Stamey.

On August 11, 1968 Gary married the love of his life, Janey Stamey, and was happily married for 52 years. Together they were inseparable.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Janey Stamey, and brother-in-law, Douglas Bryant.

Gary graduated from White County High School in 1967 and served in the Army Reserves for six years. He graduated from Piedmont College in 1973. Later, he accepted a job as a math teacher at White County High School. He was the head baseball coach, assisted in coaching football and became the athletic director in 1989 and served many years. Sports were his passion, but his love for students superseded it. He is well known in the community as “Coach Stamey” to all his past players. He had excitement for teaching young people inside and outside the classroom. Gary coined the phrase, “It’s just common sense” to all of his students, even though the Pythagorean Theorem was not. He loved shaping young minds to become all that God wanted them to be. After retiring from White County High School, Gary taught night school at Mountain Education Charter High School for 14 years, where he continued to mold young people for success.

Gary is survived by his sister, Victoria Bryant; niece, MayClaire Bryant; sister and brother-in-law, Renee and Charlie Hughes; nieces and nephews-in-law, Katie and Ronny Bass, and Caroline and Ryan Dockery; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Sonya Luna; nephew and niece-in-law, John and Kelcie Luna; niece, Mary Ann Luna; great nephews, Wyatt Bass, Weston Bass, Ezra Dockery and Leeland Luna; God children, Michelle Barrett Broadwell, Tara Barrett Powell, Chris Alewine, and Jill Alewine Worley.

The family will receive friends from 1-3 P.M. and from 5-7 P.M. on Thursday, April 15th, 2021 at Barrett Funeral Home. Services are scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on Friday, April 16th, 2021 at Barrett Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend John Luna will officiate the celebration of life. Interment will be officiated by Reverend Marc Turner at Chattahoochee United Methodist Church Cemetery in Robertstown.
