Mrs. Mildred Frances Carroll Dillon, age 92, passed peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, March 27, at the Clary Center in Toccoa. Mildred will be remembered for her kindness and sweet smile, her love of children and her homemade pound cake and chicken pie.
Mildred was born November 3, 1928, in Oconee County, South Carolina. She lived most her youth in Westminster and was a graduate of Westminster High School, After moving to Toccoa, Mildred was a member of St. Matthias Episcopal Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School for many years, was a member of the Episcopal Church Women, Altar Guild and the Daughters of the King. She loved working with children and youth and spent several years as the secretary for the Stephens County High School Counselors. She was a co-teacher for the St. Matthias Preschool that operated for a number of years and then opened her own preschool until moving to Mountain City, Georgia, where she and husband bought the York House, a summer boarding facility that they renovated to become a year round Bed and Breakfast. While in Clayton, she was a member of St. James Episcopal Church. After returning to Toccoa, Mildred served as the St. Matthias Church Secretary for several years and was a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and Neighbors for Neighbors.
Mildred was preceded in death her husband of 58 years, John Francis Dillon, Jr., a son, Stephen Charles Dillon of Clayton, infant children Carroll Ann, James Phillip and Laurel Marie, sisters Gladys Elliott, Lucille White, Wilma Carroll and Barbara Carroll, all of Westminster, a brother, J.B. Carroll of Walhalla, and step-son, John Dillon of Pleasant Grove, Alabama.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Jimmy Brown of Martin; granddaughter and husband, Mary and Russell Smith and children Maggie and Ben of Toccoa; daughters-in-law Shirlene Dillon of Clayton and Glenda Dillon of Alabama and grandsons Steve and Jonathan also of Alabama; sisters, Mary Stonecypher (husband Joe) and Martha Reid, all of Toccoa; a number of nieces, nephews and their families, and special care givers Joanne Edmonds and Breanna McCurley of Toccoa.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 31, 2021, 2 O’clock p.m. at the St. Matthias Episcopal Church with Father Scott Harding officiating. Those asked to serve as pallbearers are Gary Donahue, Roger Duncan, Jerry Rose, Dave Standard, Ken Struble and Ted Taylor
The family will receive friends at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home on Wednesday from noon until time to leave for the 2 p.m. service. Due to the health and well-being of our community, social distancing must be observed. Masks are encouraged during the visitation and service. Interment will be in Stephens Memorial Gardens following the service with the Acree-Davis Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements for Mrs. Mildred Frances Carroll Dillon.
