Dr. Robert Eugene Thompson, age 90 of Pine Valley Drive, Toccoa, GA, passed away Friday, March 19, 2021, at his residence.
A son of the late Robert Lamar and Gladys Cooper Thompson, he was born December 10, 1930, in Jackson, MS, having lived most of his life in Toccoa, GA. He was a graduate of McComb High School in McComb, MS, and also Tulane University and Tulane Medical School in New Orleans, LA. Bob served as a Captain in the United States Air Force before settling in Toccoa where he was a member of the Currahee Military Museum and the Veterans Coffee Club. Bob was a also member of the Toccoa Presbyterian Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher, Elder, and Clerk of Session for many years. Doctor Bob, as he was affectionately called, was an avid hiker and birder and enjoyed the Georgia Botanical Society. He and his wife Mary Sue appreciated travel and experiencing the cuisine native to the places they visited. They enjoyed both ballroom and square dancing and the socializing that came with these activities. Bob firmly believed in supporting the community through volunteer efforts and served as the Commissioner of the Toccoa Housing Authority and Northeast Georgia Housing Authority, the Advancement Chairman for Piedmont District Eagle Scouts, the President of the Toccoa Stephens County Chamber of Commerce, various leadership positions in the Toccoa Lions Club, and the President of the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners. Bob grew up wanting to be a doctor and had always had a passion for healing those who were hurting. He was genuinely interested in everyone he met and enjoyed knowing each person’s “story.” Bob was the Executive Committee Chairman of the Toccoa Clinic where he practiced for over 40 years. When asked how he was on any given day, you would always receive the cheerful response, “Fine” through all 90 years of his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Mary Sue and a daughter Nanette Thompson Farmer.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Ginger and Mike Jablonski of Wilson, NC, son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Beverly Thompson of Lavonia, GA, seven grandchildren, Lindsay, Cliff, Marjan, Eric, Jason, Kate, and Carol, and a number of great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held Monday, March 22, 2021, with the Reverend Paul Rettew officiating. The family has requested that flowers are to be omitted; those desiring may make memorials in his memory to the Toccoa Presbyterian Church, 205 E. Tugaloo Street, Toccoa, GA, 30577, or to Currahee Military Museum 160 N. Alexander Street, Toccoa, GA, 30577.
Interment will be in the Stephens Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the United States Air Force Honor Guard
