Lt. Col. Russell Duane Weedlun (Retired), age 93, of Buford passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at his residence, surrounded by family.
Graveside service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, March 19, 2021 at Memorial Park South Cemetery.
Russell was born December 4, 1927 to the late Lawrence & Hildur Weedlun. He was a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Russell was raised Presbyterian, but converted to the Bahai faith. As a class of 1950 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. Russell started his military career as a pilot in the Air Force. His final assignment was as Project Manager for aircraft design, stationed at the Pentagon completing 20 years of distinguished service. In addition to his military career, he went on to work as an educator for 5 years. He sang in the U.S. Naval Academy Choir and had the pleasure of singing one time for President Truman. He was a ranked bridge player and participated and coached multiple sports.
Russell is survived by his sons & daughters-in-law, Terry & Jody Weedlun of Scottsville, Virginia and Paul & Morag Weedlun of Fulton, Maryland; son, Phil Weedlun of Buford; 4 grandchildren, Ian Weedlun, Matthew Weedlun, Jessica McGovern & Joanna Weedlun; and great-grandchild, Russell McGovern.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty F. Weedlun; son, Mark Weedlun; and brothers, Burdette Weedlun, Carroll Weedlun, and Merle Weedlun.
