On Saturday, February 13, 2021, Michael Francis Smith, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away at the age of 78 after a brief battle with cancer.
Mike was born in New York City to Ruth and Frank Smith. He lived in Valley Stream, NY until he went to college at Iowa Wesleyan where he met and married his wife Karen. The young couple moved back to NY and had two children, Michael Jr. and Debbie. Mike finished college by going to night school at Hofstra University. He then worked for 30 plus years in sales and marketing in the medical diagnostic field. He and his family moved a few times, living in New York, New Jersey, Georgia, Florida and then finally back to Georgia where he retired.
As a young father, Mike enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also active in the Boy Scouts as a troop leader and was very proud when his son earned the rank of "Eagle Scout". In middle age, after years of watching his wife and daughter ride horses, he himself learned to ride and enjoyed many Sunday trail rides on his horse, Lad. Mike moved to Dahlonega in 2002 and found camaraderie and a new passion on the shooting range. He spent many happy hours there in his last years. He was a proud member of the Sheriff's Posse. He loved his family, his dogs, his community and his country.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Frank Smith. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Karen; son, Michael Jr. (Virginia) Smith of Pottstown, PA; daughter, Debbie (Tony) Franks of Canton, GA; and granddaughter, Rachael Smith of Pottstown, PA.
It was Mike's wishes to be cremated. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Association of Cancer Research at AACR.org.
