John Hughey

Obituary Date: Sunday, January 31, 2021

Mr. John Hughey was born on June 20, 1945 to Rev. and Mrs. Vasco (VS) and Lucy Bell (Martin) Hughey in Jefferson, Ga. He was a 1963 graduate of Bryan High School. After High School he joined the United States Air Force and served 4 years in active duty. He later joined the Air Force Reserve and served honorably for 26 years.  

Mr. Hughey furthered his education and graduated from Gainesville Junior College (which is now the University of North Georgia). He also attended the University of North Georgia (Dahlonega, Ga.) and Brenau University (Gainesville, Ga.) where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in business management.  

Mr. Hughey began working at the United States Postal Service in 1973 as a postal clerk and was promoted to Postmaster in Turnersville, Ga. in Habersham County. Mr. Hughey was appointed area supervisor for retail clerks for several post offices in the North Georgia area. He was also appointed retail supervisor at the Duluth, Ga. post office and retired in 2005 after 32 years of committed service and leadership.  

Mr. Hughey was a member of the St. Paul First Baptist Church of Jefferson, Ga. where he served as the Church Clerk for many years.  

Mr. Hughey married the love of his life Mrs. Brenda (Evans) Hughey on April 6, 1968. To their union were born two children Chad Hughey and Carmen (Hughey) Drew.  

On the afternoon of January 31, 2021; God called his servant home to eternal rest, divine healing, and Heavenly peace with his Love by his side. His love, commitment, and service for his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family, friends, church, this nation, in his career, and to anyone who knew Mr. John Hughey will be cherished and live on forever.  

Mr. John Hughey is preceded in death by his brother Mr. Vasco (Junior) Hughey and sister Mrs. Lucille (Hughey) Cooper; and his parents, Reverend Vasco (VS) Hughey and Mother Lucy Bell (Martin) Hughey.  

He leaves to grieve his wife of almost 53 years Mrs. Brenda Hughey; son Mr. Chad (Kaunili) Hughey (Lawrenceville, Ga.); daughter Mrs. Carmen (Thomas) Drew (Pendergrass, Ga.); brothers Mr. Willie (Annie) Hughey (Jefferson, Ga.), Mr. Ralph Hughey (Jacksonville, Fl.), Rev. JT (Glenda) Hughey (Athens, Ga.), Mr. Bobby (Vivian) Hughey (Lithonia, Ga.); Papa’s grandchildren, Taylor, Zaria, Kem, Thomas (TJ), Randy, Lanier, Darrius, Devin, Amir, James, Kristian, Kamryn, Kenneth Jr., and Raelyn; 4 great-grandchildren, goddaughter Mrs. Abbrea (Kenneth) Milton (Kennesaw, Ga.); and special niece Ms. Juanita Cooper (Charlotte, N.C.).
