Mark Allen McDonald, age 47, of Gainesville, passed away February 1, 2021, due to complications from Covid19.
Mark grew up in Gainesville and was a graduate of North Hall High School. He attended Corinth Baptist Church, where he first accepted Christ as his Savior when he was a teenager. While in high school, Mark was in a car accident and suffered a traumatic brain injury. Mark’s injuries in that accident impacted his life greatly, but, despite his limitations, Mark persevered. He was a hard worker with an unassuming kind and gentle nature.
Mark’s earthly family could not be with him in the hour of his death but are comforted that those who went before him – his father, Gail C. McDonald, grandparents, loving aunts, close friends -- were all there to hold him and guide him to a better place. The family extends thanks to the chaplain and ICU doctors and nurses at Augusta University Medical Center. They attended to Mark and gave him compassionate care, holding Mark’s hand when his family could not. They also thank Mary and Michelle Hulin of Washington, Georgia, and the many others who cared for Mark, spent time with him, and loved him.
Mark is survived by his son, William Mark McDonald, of Savannah; his mother, Betty McDonald, of Gainesville; his sister, Debra Finch (Roy), of Athens, and his brother, Jimmy McDonald (Louise), of Blue Ridge. Mark had a special fondness for his niece, Lily, who survives him, along with many loving cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
A private funeral service (with Covid19 precautions) will be held for Mark’s immediate family with Pastor Chris Swan of Corinth Baptist Church officiating, along with vocalist and pianist Brent Cochran, both of whom are longtime family friends. The family hopes to host a larger gathering of family and friends when it is safe to do so.
