Donald Harry Fair

Obituary Date: Monday, February 1, 2021

 

Donald Harry Fair, age 71, of Cumming, passed to the next world on Friday, January 29, 2021. He is survived by his wife, Jan Faires, of Cumming. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Jerome Fair, Jr. (wife Kathy) of Newton, Iowa, a nephew, Robert Jerome Fair, III (wife Patricia), of Maryland, one grandniece, two great-grandnieces, and one great-grandson. He is also survived by a stepdaughter, April Faires Lee, of Illinois, and three step grandsons: Robert Benjamin Lee (wife Lillian), Peter Isaac, and James Kelly; also a stepson, Joel Brooks Faires (wife Michelle), also of Illinois. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Jerome Fair, Sr, and Evelyn Maxwell Fair. his step granddaughter, Catherine Ann Faires, and step-great-granddaughter, Ciara Jade Faires.

Don received his BS degree from Fresno State College, with majors in microbiology and chemistry; he also earned his MS degree in electrical engineering from NC-AT&T.  His career was varied and interesting. He worked at Scripps Clinic and Research facility in La Jolla, CA. He had a great speaking voice and worked as a radio announcer in Fresno and Los Angeles, CA. He also served as announcer for the Visalia Mets, an AA softball team.  He later lived in Greensboro, NC for a few years, where he owned three bars.  Upon completion of his EE degree, he moved to the Atlanta area, where he worked as a programmer for SITA, Bell Labs, Engenico, McKesson, and Norfolk Southern Railroad. 

Don enjoyed playing and listening to music. He played clarinet, saxophone, concertina, folk harp, and guitar.  Along with his wife, he organized Nostalgia, a band of adult musicians who played for residents of senior care facilities in Forsyth, Hall, Dawson, Lumpkin, Fulton, and Bartow Counties. Nostalgia continued to play for 18 years, averaging 32 concerts each year. 

Don will be sadly missed by his family and friends. A celebration of his life will be held at 4pm on Tuesday, Feb. 22ns, in the McDonald and Son Funeral Home’s reception hall in Cumming.
