Marianna Houser Mauney

Obituary Date: Monday, January 18, 2021

Mrs. Marianna Houser Mauney age 84, of Gainesville passed away Monday, January 18, 2021 at her home with her family and close friends by her side.

 A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm., Wednesday, January 27, 2021in the Chapel of Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel. Dr. Bill Coates will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Shady Grove Baptist Church and cemetery in Cherryville, NC.

 Marianna was born August 14, 1936 in Cherryville, NC to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Dellinger Houser. She graduated from Cherryville High School in 1954. She received her BA from Greensboro College and later her Masters of Education from Brenau College.

She married her high school sweetheart Ray Dean Mauney, Sr. on August 18, 1957 and they moved to Gainesville, GA. Marianna and Ray were married for 56 years until his death in 2013.

She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Hall County Junior League and The Garden Club of Gainesville.

Marianna taught at multiple schools in Hall County, including Lanier Elementary, Airline, Lula, Gainesville High School and later Gainesville Middle School. She retired from teaching and started a new career, when she and Ray purchased The Brass Key (An upscale furniture and furnishings boutique) in Gainesville.

After the Brass Key closed in 1999 she diverted her attention to her family helping her daughter and son-in-law raise their two toddler sons. She spent many countless hours attending the children’s horse shows, soccer matches, football games, school plays, and baseball games.

Marianna will be best remembered for the immeasurable love and devotion to her family, church, and her community.

She is preceded by her husband Ray Dean Mauney Sr., their youngest son, William Nelson Mauney, her parents and sister, Edwina Crouch.

Survivors are her son, Ray D. Mauney Jr (Lisa) and their daughter Lauren; Daughter, Melissa M. Simpson (Klay) and their sons, Klay Jr. (KJ) and Carter; sisters in law and many nieces and nephews. Her special lifetime friends include Merel Morrison, Anne Welborn, Patti Minton and David Smith.

The family would also like to thank her wonderful caregivers Denise Stovall and Karla Soto, for all their love and endless hours of devotion to Marianna. 

Special thanks to Northeast Georgia Medical Centers physicians, nurses and staff.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to be made to The Marianna Mauney Educational Scholarship Fund at Brenau University.
