Mildred England Ables

Obituary Date: Sunday, January 10, 2021

Mrs. Mildred England Ables, age 88, joined our Father in Heaven on Sunday, January 10, 2021. She died from complications associated with COVID-19.

Mildred was born in Hall County, GA on August 29, 1932 to the late Homer Joseph and Susan Mae Marshall England. Following her graduation from Lyman Hall High School, she attended and graduated from Truett McConnell College, where she met her husband Robert Lawson Ables, Sr. After college, Mildred served as a missionary for the Home Mission Board in New Mexico and later attended the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing to graduate as a Registered Nurse. She worked in several areas of the Nursing profession including labor and delivery, nursery and public health nurse. She felt a strong calling to inspire future generations of nurses and taught many years at Brenau College as a nursing professor. While there, she also served as Dean of the Hall County School of Nursing. Mildred touched the lives of many future generations of nurses during her extensive career.

Mildred was a member of First Baptist Church in Cleveland, GA. She adored her church family as well as her children, grandchildren and extended family. Mildred and Bob loved bringing family and friends together by hosting barbecues at their mountain home. After retiring they enjoyed traveling, painting and reading. Her primary reading was her daily devotional which she practiced each morning. Mildred was an amazing person - smart, very spiritual, always kind, and a true southern, Christian lady, loved by many.

Mildred was married to the late Robert L. Ables, Sr on June 10, 1953. They resided in Gainesville, GA where they worked and raised their family. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Gerald England, Lamar England and LaVerne Higgs.

Mildred is survived by her 3 children: Susan Irick, Cleveland, GA (Lumpkin County), Angela Ables, Dawsonville, GA and Robert Ables (wife Mary Jane), Gainesville, GA and 4 grandchildren: Katie Irick, Cleveland, Jonathan Ables (wife Megan), Raleigh, NC, Jared Ables, Salt Lake City, UT, and Lauren May (husband Scott), Marietta, GA. In addition, she is survived by 3 great-grandchildren, Jack, Max and Millie Ables. Other surviving relatives include her brother, Gene England (wife Rita), Betty Roberts, Nell Walls and Illa Myers Wilkes (husband Elmer), all live in the Gainesville/Talmo area, as well as many other nieces and nephews.

A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2021. It will be at the primitive Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery north of Cleveland, GA on Corinth Church Road, which is on the left, 1 mile above Turner’s Corner on Hwy 129N. This is a small church cemetery just up the mountain from Bob and Mildred’s mountain home near Turner’s Corner. Rev. Dennis Turner from First Baptist Church Cleveland will officiate. (Those in attendance are asked to please wear a mask and adhere to public health guidelines regarding COVID-19.)

In lieu of flowers, the family requests you donate to the White County Food Pantry: PO Box 356 Cleveland, GA 30528.
