Carlile, Alice Ann Sutton our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2020 at the age of 84. She was welcomed to her heavenly home by both of her parents, Dr. Bland Sutton and Alice Merrill Sutton.
Ann was born September 1, 1936 in Pocatello, Idaho where she grew up with her sister Barbara Jean. She graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in mathematics, and was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She became a math teacher in Southern, California. She later became a computer programmer where she was a pioneer in her field. Ann was one of the only women at the companies she worked for, in her industry, in the late 70’s and 80’s in California and Utah. After retirement, she lived in Utah, Mississippi, and Georgia. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she played the organ for many decades. She enjoyed doing crafts and was an avid quilter and knitter, belonging to many guilds that formed lifelong friendships and gave opportunities for travel. Ann outfitted her family in beautiful sweaters and quilts over the years, as well as donating many items to church and charity causes.
Ann was quick to smile and laugh with you and often had a sparkle in her eyes and infectious good humor. She valiantly fought the horrible disease of Alzheimer’s the last 13 years of her life and although she forgot many events and people, she could still sit down and play you a hymn or two on the piano.
Ann is survived by her sister, Barbara Jean McDevitt; her daughters, Nancy (Roger) Kimball and Susan (Jim) Thorderson as well as 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
A memorial graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on January 3, 2021 at Memorial Park South Funeral Home & Cemetery.
