It is with a heavy heart that Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home announces the passing of one of our own, Mr. Larry Odom, age 71, of Dahlonega.
Larry was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born just off the Dahlonega square on January 6, 1949 to the late Barney and Ellene Trammell Odom. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister Regina Ravan. In a revival of 1966 Larry trusted Christ as his personal Savior. He was a graduate of Lumpkin County High School. After high school, Larry served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
Larry came back home to the place he loved, Dahlonega, GA. He began a career in banking that would take him to every level of service in his community. For more than thirty-five years, Larry made friends far and near in his profession and he retired as President and CEO of the Dahlonega United Community Bank, “The Bank That Service Built”. A true servant would best describe Larry Odom. He cared deeply for his community and friends. His service reached way beyond banking to being on the advisory board of The Holly Theater, Secretary of The Dahlonega Lion’s Club, Board of Directors for United Community Bank, Board of Directors for the Airport Authority, The Gideons, board member of the Rainbow Children’s Home, Board of Directors for the hospital, a notary, and a member of the local VFW where he proudly served on the flag detail putting out crosses and flags for the veterans.
After Larry’s retirement his servant’s heart did not quit beating, as he joined the staff at Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home to be the family representative for his friends and family who had lost a loved one. Among Larry’s many traits, what stands out most was his contagious sense of humor. He had a way of making you smile second to no one. Larry proudly wore the crown of Dahlonega’s “Gold Rush King”! He was a tremendous “bright-spot” for the community, and he will be greatly missed.
Missing him most will be his beloved wife of forty-nine years Shirley Reeves Odom, Dahlonega; daughter Emily Timms (Eric), Clermont; son Matthew Odom, Cameron, NC; his grandchildren, who called him “Poppy”, Jackson Odom, Abigail Odom, Taylan Timms, Teegan Timms, and Trennen Timms; niece Leigh Ann Gaddis (John); and great-nephew Evan Gaddis; best and special friends Danny and Bea Phillips; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Lamar and Paige Reeves; brother-in-law Steven Seabolt; and uncles E.F. Trammell, Jerry Trammell, and Jimmy Trammell.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Randy Perry, the Rev. Eric Timms, and the Rev. Chris Anderson will officiate. Interment will follow in Siloam Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
