Mrs. Mary Susan Auguste Sherwood Thompson, age 90 of Pine Valley Drive, Toccoa, GA, passed away Thursday, November 19, 2020, at her residence.
A daughter of the late Dr. Ralph Eugene Sherwood and Ruth Martyn Sherwood, she was born August 10, 1930, in New Orleans, LA, having lived most of her life in Toccoa, GA. She was a graduate of Louise S. McGee School and H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College in New Orleans, LA. Mary Sue was a member of the Toccoa Presbyterian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, was active in Presbyterian Women, and served as an Elder. She was an avid reader and a former member of the Toccoa Literacy Club. She enjoyed volunteering at the Stephens County Public Library and Habitat for Humanity and was a member of the Currahee Military Museum. She loved sewing and made many clothes for her family including costumes for many local community theater productions. Mary Sue was a true southern lady who loved her family, supporting her husband in his career, and entertaining friends and family. She was preceded in death by a daughter Nanette Thompson Farmer.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years Dr. Robert E. Thompson of the home, daughter and son-in-law Ginger and Mike Jablonski of Wilson, NC, son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Beverly Thompson of Lavonia, GA, seven grandchildren, Lindsay, Cliff, Marjan, Eric, Jason, Kate, and Carol, and a number of great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held Monday, November 23, 2020, with the Reverend Paul Rettew and the Reverend Dr. Tommy Childress officiating. The family has requested that flowers are to be omitted; those desiring may make memorials in her memory to the Toccoa Presbyterian Church, 205 E. Tugalo Street, Toccoa, GA, 30577, or to Currahee Military Museum 160 N. Alexander Street, Toccoa, GA, 30577.
Interment will be in the Stephens Memorial Gardens.
