Donald “Don” Ralph Whitmire

Obituary Date: Thursday, November 12, 2020

 

Mr. Donald “Don” Ralph Whitmire age 86 of Gainesville, Ga passed away on Thursday November 12, 2020 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.

Don was born on January 24, 1934 in Forsyth County, Georgia to the late Ralph Whitmire and Floyce Reed Whitmire. He moved to Gainesville at an early age and attended Lyman Hall School. He entered the business world with his brother, Doug, as a co-owner of Don and Doug’s Hatchery. After leaving the poultry industry, he moved into the real-estate world as a land developer, where he developed many communities in the North Georgia Region. He served several terms on the Hall County Commission Board, and one as chairman. During his time of serving he was instrumental in helping bring an abundance of industries and growth to Hall County, and he was truly a servant for the people of Hall County, Ga.  

Don was a lifetime member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he served in various capacities such as, Sunday school superintendent, Board of trustees and on finance committees.       

He enjoyed traveling the world but he most enjoyed spending time with his family, attending anything and everything that involved his children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lila Waters Whitmire, wife, Joyce Ellen Thompson Whitmire, and brothers, Doyle Whitmire and Raymond Whitmire.        

Mr. Whitmire is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Donna Jean and Mike “Moon Pie” Wilson of Gainesville, son, Tim Whitmire of Gainesville, mother of his children, Paige Whitmire of Rome, grandchildren, Matt Wilson, Josh Wilson, Shea Whitmire, Nick Whitmire, Beau Whitmire, 9 great- grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law, Doug and Pat Whitmire of Gainesville, and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and close friends.       

A special thanks to Jerry Thompson, Joy Thompson Chamlee. Jonathan Thompson and their families for allowing our dad to be a part of their lives.         

Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday November 15, 2020 at 3:00 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Stacey Phillips, Reverend Gary English and Grandson, Matt Wilson will officiate. The family will receive friends on Saturday November 14, 2020 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
