Chuck McKissick

Obituary Date: Sunday, October 18, 2020

Chuck McKissick, age 70, of Gainesville, passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2020 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Chuck began playing drums when he was 13 years old and was involved in music in some form for the remainder of his life.  He spent 20 years in the US Army Band system, playing drums and percussion at recruiting concerts all over the US and Europe.  He continued in his profession after retirement, playing in local bands and orchestras, including Back In Time, the Gainesville Symphony, the Toccoa Symphony, Northwinds Symphonic Band and many others.  He played for Presidents, foreign dignitaries, celebrities and famous musicians.  He was in a Scottish Pipe and Drum Band who backed up Faith Hill when she sang the National Anthem at the Super Bowl in Atlanta. He also was part of the adjunct faculty at both Truett McConnell University and Toccoa Falls College.

Chuck was a talented and well-respected musician in the North Georgia community.  Despite this, he never wanted to be in the limelight and was uncomfortable with praise and accolades.  He said the best part of being a drummer is that you get to be in a band but no one pays attention to you unless you make a mistake.

He loved God, his family, playing the drums, history,  Disney World and falling asleep in his recliner. He was dedicated to his church, Lakewood Baptist and the Crosspoint Band.  He also loved his Sunday School Class, Wisdom Seekers, and the "East Point Gang" who provided much prayer and encouragement during his illness. The family would like to thank the numerous friends, family and colleagues who have encouraged them during the past few weeks.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Kathy McKissick; children, Casey McKissick and Andy McKissick; brother, Phillip McKissick; brother-in-law, Billy Free (Debbie); sister-in-law, Amy Rowe (Harvey); special cousins, Joyce Humphries and Gloria McKissick; a host of nieces, nephews, colleagues and fellow musicians.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Sosebee Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Lakewood Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Smiley officiating. A private interment will be held at the Georgia  National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Lakewood Baptist Church, 2235 Thompson Bridge Rd, Gainesville, GA 30501 www.lakewoodlife.org
