Jamie Hill Overton

Obituary Date: Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Jamie Hill Overton died peacefully on September 30th at his home surrounded by people who loved him dearly including his wife Patricia, daughter Ellen Ruth and son Don. Jamie (known as Jim by many) was born the youngest of four sons to a sharecropper family in West Tennessee. Being a good athlete, Jamie was the first Overton to graduate from college when he left home to pursue a football scholarship in Mississippi. He played football, joined the Army, and graduated years later from Murray State using the GI Bill.

In 1960, Jamie met the first love of his life Alice Ruth Staulcup in Humboldt, TN. They soon married and moved to Augusta, GA where he was “The Coach” of the Butler HS Bulldogs. In 1971, Jamie moved the family to Atlanta, GA where he began a new career as “The Principal” of Walker HS - later retiring from Tucker HS in 1988. He and Alice raised a family that included Ruth Norris, Don Overton (Heidi), Ellen Overton Lark (Dan) and Michael Overton (Karen).

In 1998, Jamie lost his wife, Alice, to cancer. He suffered alongside Alice greatly through her many surgeries and chemotherapy treatments. In 1999, through a church singles ministry, Jamie met the second love of his life, Patricia “Patti” Sluder. Patti and Jamie soon married and embarked on a marvelous love affair filled with travel and family outings for the next 20 years. Few men are privileged enough to have two wonderful wives in their life. Jamie was truly blessed with eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren: Lisa Lyn, Deborah “Debbie” Lee, Robert George, Jason, Joshua, Joshua Dalton, Skylar Lucas, Jamie Grey, Sophia, Phoebe, Jack and Caroline.

Jamie finished his life doing mission work with the First Redeemer Church in Cumming, GA. Jamie prepared and delivered food to the hungry citizens of North Georgia, always inviting them into a relationship with Christ. He was ebullient when he brought a new person to Christ through the ministry.

Jamie lived a robust life in his 87 years and died a “Man in Full” with few regrets.
