J D Brown

Obituary Date: Thursday, September 10, 2020

Mr. J D Brown, age 80, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday, September 10, 2020.

Mr. Brown was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on November 12, 1939 to the late Lewis and Pauline Segers Brown. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Loyal Brown. During his childhood J D’s life was filled with love from his parents and his siblings. He, like many in the Garland community, attended Garland Elementary School. J D then moved to town school and graduated from Lumpkin County High School with the class of 1958. Right out of school he married his high school sweetheart, Syble Gable, and they shared their love for sixty-two years of faithful marriage. The only day greater than the day that J D married Syble was Thursday of the summer revival at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in 1955. J D surrendered his life to Jesus Christ and that summer he was baptized with two of his siblings and his mother. J D’s relationship with his Savior prompted him to raise his family in church and they all attended the singings, conferences, revivals, and all that encompassed church life together.

J D had a career with Standard Telephone for more than 40 years. Work was never anything he backed down from and he often worked two jobs to provide for his family. Between working at his job with the telephone company and doing side jobs as an electrician, many have had their houses and shops wired by him. J D loved his family. His beloved wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren all lovingly called him “Papa J D”.

Survivors include his wife, of sixty two years, Syble Brown; children and spouses Fran and David Wasson, Randy and Jan Brown, Pat and Stevie Walden, and Cindy and Randall Barnes, all of Dahlonega; brother and sister-in-law Charles and Barbara Brown; sister Vernell Cochran, all of Dahlonega; grandchildren Josh and Megan Walden, Brooke and Matt Smith, Carmen and Rev. Will Fuller, Kayla Walden, Haleigh Brown, Holden Brown, and Kelly and Jason Harrison; great-grandchildren Hunter, Ellie, Micah, Tanner, Annie, Waylon, Maddox, Jackson, Walt, Grant, Wyatt, Clair, and Libby; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Sunday, September 13, 2020 at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. The Rev. Les Fuller, the Rev. Will Fuller, and the Rev. Lyman Caldwell will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home.

If you plan to attend the visitation and funeral, please practice safe distancing and wear a mask. The funeral service can be heard on your radio on channel 102.5 FM in the church parking lot on the day of the service.
