Jewell "Curly" Dowdy

Mr. Jewell Jerome “Curly” Dowdy, age 74, of Dahlonega passed away Thursday, August 27, 2020.

Mr. Dowdy was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on June 3, 1946 to the late Dave and Clara Perdue Dowdy. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his siblings Grady Dowdy, Sonny Dowdy, Leon Dowdy, David Dowdy, Dovie Avans, and Lucille Hackney.  

The beloved nickname “Curly” has followed Mr. Dowdy most of his life. He retired from The University of North Georgia as an electrical supervisor for more than 28 years. Mr. Dowdy then started his own company, Dowdy Construction. He was a member of Siloam Baptist Church. “Curly” Dowdy will forever be missed by his family and his friends that he cherished greatly.

Survivors include his beloved wife Cindy Dowdy, Dahlonega; his children Jimbo and Chrystal Dowdy, Dahlohnega, Tammy Dowdy and Carl Cox, Dawsonville, John and Jessica Dowdy, Dahlonega, Deanne and Darren Lenahan, Newport Richey, FL, Tina Wycough, Dallas, TX, Josh and Cherri Goodman, Dahlonega, and Jacob and Jennifer Goodman, Cleveland; brother Ronnie Dowdy, Cleveland; sister Elizabeth Shug Dees, Atlanta; and a special nephew Carl Adams.

His beloved grandchildren James Lee Dowdy Jr., Courtney Dowdy, Kyle and Amber Dowdy, Chase and Bailey Abernathy, Rebecca Dowdy, BoJack Dowdy, Christopher Dowdy, Katie Slaughter, Mathew Slaughter, Zachary Slaughter, Christine Bice, Jennifer Bice, Ryan Bice, Leslie Wycough, Wyatt and Miranda McClung, Tommy and Gabby Goodman, Cindy and John Goodman, Levi McClung, Evan McClung, Alexis Misner, Misty Goodman, Gannon Misner, Fiona Watson, Lucas Misner, Cody Goodman, Aaron Goodman, Landon Grizzle, Levi Grizzle, Lakota Grizzle, and London Eriquezzo.

Curly's grandchildren affectionately called him "papa" and his beloved great-grandchildren Bella Dowdy, Paisley English, Braxton Dowdy, Halleigh Wears, Landon Dasaro, Ariel Greene, Layla Greene, Zayne Bice, Wesley Wimpy, Ariana Smith, Adelyn McClung, and Asher McClung all endeared him with the same name.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Saturday, August 29, 2020 at the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Lyman Caldwell and the Rev. Melvin Reeves will officiate. Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Friday and 9:00 AM to the funeral hour Saturday at the funeral home.
