Lewis Canup

Obituary Date: Thursday, August 20, 2020

Lewis Canup, age 90 of Clarkesville, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2020 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Hiawassee, Georgia on February 16, 1930, Mr. Canup was the son of the late Smith Monroe Canup and Annie Aurora Allison Canup.  After graduating from The Nacoochee School, Mr. Canup went to work for the Georgia Department of Transportation in 1952 and would also begin work on his PE Bachelor Degree from the University of Georgia. He would retire as District 1 Engineer with 34 years of service.  It wouldn’t take long before Mr. Canup realized retirement wasn’t for him.  Two weeks later he began working for Habersham County as County Administrator, later County Engineer, the position from which he retired in June of 2015.  Mr. Canup was a man of well-founded faith and extremely high moral character.  He loved the Lord and he loved His family.  Mr. Canup was a member, deacon, past adult Sunday School director and past choir leader at Macedonia Baptist Church.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Canup is preceded in death by his wife Laraine Burke Canup, brothers Edward Canup, Charles Canup and Bobby Canup and sisters Ruth Canup, Margie Nell Brown and Elene Ravan.

Survivors include daughter and son in law Deborah and Rev. Larry Free of Clarkesville, daughter and son in law Kathrine “Kathie” and Jerry Ivester of Hartwell, son and daughter in law R. “Keith” and Judy Canup of Toccoa, daughter and son in law Tamara and Michael Jamison of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, son and daughter in law Timothy “Tim” and Kim Canup of Toccoa, sisters Jean Canup Stancil of Cleveland and Kathleen Canup Taylor of Chapin, South Carolina, brother Lamar Canup of Cleveland, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, as well as special caregiver Millie London (Bo) of Cleveland.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, August 23, 2020 at Hillside Gardens Cemetery in Clarkesville.
