Catherine Stancil

Obituary Date: Friday, August 14, 2020

Catherine Ruth Payne Stancil, age 93, passed away at her home in Lumpkin County, Georgia on August 14, 2020. She was born in Copperhill, Tennessee to William Payne and Lillie Mae Curtis Payne (Gerrells). She spent her childhood in Copperhill and Chattanooga, Tennessee as well as in Lumpkin County, Georgia. She attended Lydia School and Lumpkin County High School. She married Douglas F. Stancil and they had two children, Charles William and Barbara Ann, before he was killed during World War II in Germany in March of 1945. She later married Jess Stancil and they had two children, Gale Esther and Mark Edward. In 1949, they moved to Marietta, Georgia where she was active in PTA. She was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church in Marietta. She remained in Marietta for 55 years before returning to Lumpkin County in 2005. She also served as the president of the PTA at Blackwell Elementary School for a year. She attended Massey Business School and worked in the business and banking industries for around 35 years.

In addition to her parents, and both husbands, she is preceded in death by an infant brother, Calvin Payne. She is survived by her children, Charles (Willie) Stancil of Marietta, Barbara (Leon) Pirkle of Dahlonega, Gale Barnett of Woodstock, and Mark Stancil of Woodstock; and sister-in-law, Iris Smith of Dahlonega. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. 

The family is forever grateful for the kind and compassionate assistance and care from so many people during her declining years, and up until her final days on this earth. Those that the family wishes to thank are- RN Renee Gearing, great-granddaughter Bethany Harbeson, grandchildren Linda (Paul) Harbeson, and many of the staff associated with Kindred Hospice of Georgia. 

Interment will take place at Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery in Dahlonega, Georgia following a private family graveside service on August 15, 2020. Anyone who wishes to make a donation in her memory is encouraged to donate to Macedonia Baptist Church in Dahlonega, or to your own favorite charity.
